The AJC is reporting that the Brown Bag Lunches on the Marietta Square have been canceled…what do you think about this? At a cost of only $200 a piece it seems a bit much to cancel them. I’m guessing that merchants were upset, but how many of those moms took their kids to lunch on the Marietta Square and also spent money. Most of them, I’d bet.

Your thoughts?

Bella Simmons, 3, from Marietta (right) splashes in the renovated fountain with Daniel Horne, 3, from Marietta. The Thursday Brown Bag concerts on the Marietta Square during May and September, a tradition for years, may be ending. The Marietta Square just underwent a four-month long renovation that included ornamental poles for lights and traffic signals, decorative lighting and consolidated signage, brick crosswalks, and a refurbished fountain.

Here’s the quote from the AJC on the issue:

At least, that was the way the Brown Bag Lunch Concert was supposed to work.

But few of the city and county employees headquartered just blocks away ever showed up with store-bought fare. In their place came moms toting dancing toddlers, said Mike Gabler, a city parks official.

“It rapidly turned into a moms’ day out type of thing,” he said.

Businesses complained about the parking spaces lost to the concert.

And the city finally relented to their appeals: after this month, Marietta will cancel the series, which has run at noon on Thursdays in May and September as long as Gabler can remember.

“The September concerts are canceled at this point,” said Gabler, the recreation services manager for the Marietta Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department. And it’s a “good assumption” that May will be canceled, as well, he said.

The concerts, which cost about $200 apiece, were not originally intended as merely an economic stimulant. They also were meant to provide cultural enrichment to the public, Gabler said.

The North Marietta Parkway is currently closed from Powder Springs Street to Polk Street and Whitlock Avenue is closed from the Marietta Square to McDonald Street.

This closure is due to falling trees knocking down several power poles in the area. This has caused a power outage in the immediate area and created traffic hazards requiring the road closure for repair and clean up. Crews are currently working to restore power and traffic flow however for the time being commuters are urged to use alternate routes around this area.

The North Marietta Parkway can be accessed from East of the Marietta Square or traveling around the loop.

Whitlock Avenue can be accessed from Waverly Way or Polk Street which are both open.

Repairs are underway however they will likely take several hours and could possibly extend into Monday.

Spring is in full bloom and that usually means mosquitoes would soon be flying around Marietta, but the city is taking steps to prevent mosquitoes from growing and causing problems for residents.

Marietta’s Public Works Department is beginning a program that offers to send an employee to homes to kill mosquito larvae and prevent adult mosquitoes by putting chemically treated briquettes in standing water on private property, including creeks, which are breeding areas for mosquitoes.

Residents with a mosquito problem can call Marietta’s Public Works Department at 770-794-5676 for help getting rid of the mosquitoes.

Marietta is also taking care of mosquitoes on city rights of way, operations manager Scott Lawler said.

To help prevent mosquitoes in the past, the Public Works Department sprayed Aqua-Reslin at night, which eliminated the adults but was not effective against the daytime biting mosquitoes.

In addition to removing standing water, adding the environmentally friendly briquettes to standing water is the best option to eliminate mosquitoes, Lawler said.
Other things you can do

Eliminate standing water

• Keep gutters clean and free of debris

• Keep lids on outdoor garbage cans

• Drill holes in the bottom of recycling bins

• Remove all standing water on property

• Store boats so water drains

• Remove or cover all old tires stored outside

• Drain or flush all birdbaths

• Drain all large toys that are stored outside

• Store all yard tools properly

• Maintain pools and ponds

• Remind neighbors to eliminate breeding sites on their property

• Repair leaky pipes and faucets

• Screen rain barrels and openings to water tanks

• Eliminate weeds and tall grass

Protect Yourself

• Wear long pants, long sleeved shirts and socks

• Use insect repellant containing DEET (Note: Read carefully and follow manufacturer’s instructions. Do not use on infants or pregnant women.)

• Make sure open doors and windows are screened

• Stay indoors when mosquitoes are active

At least 350 new technology jobs are coming to the city of Marietta in the next 18 months as a Fortune 500 company moves two offices from California to our community. First Data, a reseller of payment processing systems, has leased an approximately 260,000 square foot building on Canton Road off I-75 to consolidate its west coast and Kennesaw, Ga., operations. While some California employees may relocate to Marietta, the company says many of the positions will be filled locally.

“First Data was looking at opportunities in several states, and the main reason we are the winner is because of the new Opportunity Zones we created late in 2009,” city manager Bill Bruton said.

Opportunity Zones are a Georgia Department of Community Affairs economic development program that encourages new businesses to locate in the city or expand existing businesses here. When two or more jobs are created, businesses may be eligible to receive $3,500 in employee state tax credits for each new job through October 2019. Marietta’s opportunity zones include portions of Fairground Street, Roswell Street, Powder Springs Street, the South Loop, Franklin Road, and industrial and heavy commercial locations throughout Marietta.

“We are excited that First Data is the first business to relocate in one of Marietta’s new opportunity zones that will help the city’s economy and provide new jobs for our community,” Mayor Steve Tumlin said. “With help from the Georgia departments of Economic Development and Community Affairs, Marietta was one of the leaders in the state to take advantage of the program that encourages companies to create jobs by providing state tax credits. This is a great announcement for Marietta and Georgia.”

Too bad there were less than 10 in attendance for this information filled couple of hours.

An arborist, landscape planner, and a Ga. forester presented great program of things to think about as we look at our tree canopy and decide which needs help and how to best address what needs to be done.

The city of Marietta is scheduled to begin a $1.3 million improvement project to the Square January 4, which will provide better service to businesses around the Square and beautify the downtown area. When complete, upgrades will include repaving the Square; replacing the water main under the parking spaces on North Park Square, West Park Square and South Park Square; brick crosswalks at all four intersections of the Square; replacing street poles with black better-looking poles; reducing the number of signs; and replacing existing parking signs.
Project planning

To help reduce the impact of construction to Marietta’s citizens, merchants and visitors, several meetings have been held to review the best available options for parking, deliveries and access to the Square while construction is taking place. The city chose to begin construction January 4 because merchants usually experience slower business during the winter, and the city and other groups and organizations host fewer events than at other times during the year. City leaders are working with contractors and city departments to make sure the work is completed as fast as possible.

The waterline, located under the street, is old and needs to be replaced. “Visitors will be able to access the sidewalks at all times during construction,” Public Works director Dan Conn said.

The new waterline will provide better services to residents and businesses near the Square. Construction is scheduled to be completed by May 1, and the city will work with the contractor to manage the work schedule to minimize the disruption to businesses, city manager Bill Bruton said. “The city delayed the project, which will allow us to work during the slowest months for businesses on the Square.”
Parking and traffic

Motorists will be able to park along all four sides of the Square during construction, but not all spaces will be available at all times. The project will include a few lane closures during construction, but at least four ways entering and leaving the Square will be maintained at all times during construction. Detour signs will be posted to direct motorists to alternate routes. Access to the Square could be reduced to two entrances and two exits for a short time because of the weather. The city has developed a plan to help vendors and merchants unload merchandise in loading zones around the Square.

City facilities including City Hall, 205 Lawrence Street, the Marietta Fire Department headquarters, 112 Haynes Street, and the Marietta Police Department, 240 Lemon Street, will not be affected by the construction or detours.

Construction on the waterline will occur in two phases on each side of the Square, and service will be restored when construction is complete. Workers will replace the waterline first and begin by replacing the line under the parking spaces in front of businesses on North Park Square. Waterlines will also be replaced under the parking spaces on West Park Square and South Park Square. The city plans to close no more than half of the parking along the north side of North Park Square at a time during most of the construction on the waterline. The city expects half of the parking spaces along one side of North and West Park Square to be closed for approximately two to three days during construction while work moves to West Park Square.

After work is completed on the water main along North Park Square, work will begin on West Park Square, then South Park Square. Work along West Park Square and South Park Square will be completed in a similar fashion as North Park Square. Contractors will also begin construction on brick crosswalks, and work will continue at the same time workers are replacing the waterline. Workers will build brick crosswalks across part of the intersections of West Park Square, South Park Square and East Park Square.

After construction is complete on the waterline near the North Park Square and East Park Square intersection, sidewalk construction will begin at the intersection of North Park Square and East Park Square. As construction begins on the water main around the Square, improvements to the crosswalk will follow at each intersection. The crosswalk construction at each intersection will be completed in two phases to keep traffic flowing smoothly and help motorists park easier.
Sign, pole upgrades

The city will replace signs around the Square while construction on the waterline and crosswalks is taking place. Staff will replace current poles and street signs with decorative ones. Workers will reduce the overall number of poles by putting street signs on light poles or consolidating them with other signs on decorative sign poles. Workers will replace the remaining overhead light poles with new decorative poles during the sign replacement.
Street repaving

North Park Square, West Park Square, South Park Square, and East Park Square will be resurfaced after construction on the waterline and crosswalks is completed. Workers plan to mill and resurface the streets at night to maintain traffic flow during the day. The resurfacing is expected to be complete by the end of April, but could extend until the end of May.

With so many projects being constructed simultaneously, citizens, merchants, motorists and visitors are encouraged to be patient during construction.

The project is funded by the special purpose local option sales tax passed by voters in 2005 to fund transportation improvements.

An efficient transportation system, which places a high premium on the quality of life of Marietta’s citizens, is a goal City Council established as part of its vision statement.

For more information, call Marietta’s Public Works Department at 770-794-5650, or to sign up for e-mail updates, visit mariettaga.gov/transportation.
