Spring is in full bloom and that usually means mosquitoes would soon be flying around Marietta, but the city is taking steps to prevent mosquitoes from growing and causing problems for residents.

Marietta’s Public Works Department is beginning a program that offers to send an employee to homes to kill mosquito larvae and prevent adult mosquitoes by putting chemically treated briquettes in standing water on private property, including creeks, which are breeding areas for mosquitoes.

Residents with a mosquito problem can call Marietta’s Public Works Department at 770-794-5676 for help getting rid of the mosquitoes.

Marietta is also taking care of mosquitoes on city rights of way, operations manager Scott Lawler said.

To help prevent mosquitoes in the past, the Public Works Department sprayed Aqua-Reslin at night, which eliminated the adults but was not effective against the daytime biting mosquitoes.

In addition to removing standing water, adding the environmentally friendly briquettes to standing water is the best option to eliminate mosquitoes, Lawler said.
Other things you can do

Eliminate standing water

• Keep gutters clean and free of debris

• Keep lids on outdoor garbage cans

• Drill holes in the bottom of recycling bins

• Remove all standing water on property

• Store boats so water drains

• Remove or cover all old tires stored outside

• Drain or flush all birdbaths

• Drain all large toys that are stored outside

• Store all yard tools properly

• Maintain pools and ponds

• Remind neighbors to eliminate breeding sites on their property

• Repair leaky pipes and faucets

• Screen rain barrels and openings to water tanks

• Eliminate weeds and tall grass

Protect Yourself

• Wear long pants, long sleeved shirts and socks

• Use insect repellant containing DEET (Note: Read carefully and follow manufacturer’s instructions. Do not use on infants or pregnant women.)

• Make sure open doors and windows are screened

• Stay indoors when mosquitoes are active

Held in the city hall council chamber this evening 3-24 was one of several
workshops on the trees in Marietta and how to plan and plant new trees.

Too bad there were less than 10 in attendance for this information filled couple of hours.

An arborist, landscape planner, and a Ga. forester presented great program of things to think about as we look at our tree canopy and decide which needs help and how to best address what needs to be done.

It was on the Calendar from the City of Marietta:
http://www.mariettaga.gov/departments/parks_rec/calendarview.aspx?id=3988

This workshop and others are supported via a federal grant.

The Marietta Square Farmers Market is in full swing and so popular this year that Marietta City Council July 8 approved extending it through December 26 along North Park Square. The market takes place every Saturday – rain or shine – from 9 a.m.-noon.

“The market features products that are grown and produced in Georgia, including fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, plants, flowers, honey, breads, garlic, cheese and other such items,” market director Johnny Fulmer said.

To allow vendors and organizers enough time to get set up for the market, North Park Square and a portion of Mill Street will be closed from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday mornings through December 26 for the market.
About the Marietta Square Farmers Market

The Marietta Square Farmers Market has an average of 48 vendors and hundreds of customers each week. Customers have lots of variety to choose from including heirloom tomatoes, fruits and vegetables that are rarely, if ever, available from the grocery store. The farmers market has staples including potatoes, onions, tomatoes, squash, beans, flower arrangements, local honey, herbal soaps, whole grain breads, fudge, pies, jelly, jam and preserves. Customers can also take home many live garden, yard and culinary herb plants and fresh-squeezed lemonade.

I have to say that this will be a great thing for the city if the Marietta City Council decides to vote for a permanent smoking ban in Glover Park (downtown Marietta). The cigar smoke from some cheap cigars that someone was smoking was terrible at the last concert I attended. Why should I have to inhale someone else’s second and smoke, or why should my kids have to for that matter?

Currently, both the city and county only ban smoking in government buildings, officials said. Rich Buss, the city’s parks director, said smoking is also prohibited in restaurants in compliance with the Georgia Smokefree Air Act of 2005, but there are a few exceptions. For example, smoking is allowed if a bar or restaurant denies access to employees and customers younger than 18 or if it has a private, enclosed room with a separate air handling system independent of the main one.

In reading the excerpt from the MDJ article about the subject, Councilman the Rev. Anthony Coleman said he is concerned about setting a precedent for banning smoking at other city parks.

“Even though I don’t smoke, they have a right to smoke. They do have a right and it is a public park,” Coleman said.

While I personally agree someone should have the right to do whatever they want, I also don’t think my health should be compromised by their decision – how is that fair to folks that don’t want to pollute their lungs?

Councilman Chalfant is in support of banning smoking in all public parks in the City of Marietta. Some other Georgia City governments also prohibit smoking in public parks. These include Clayton, Tift and Henry counties as well as the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority, and the city of Gainesville, Ga.

What do you think? Please comment and let everyone know…
