Despite the economic downturn locally and across the country, the value of properties in the city of Marietta’s downtown has increased almost $17 million the last three years.
The Downtown Marietta Development Authority, a self-taxing district of businesses downtown, saw its 2009 tax digest increase 28 percent to almost $77 million, a jump of $16.7 million over 2007 values. The digest also increased in 2008 by over $411,191.
The district includes businesses on the Square, Roswell Street and locations west to the Hilton Atlanta/Marietta Hotel & Conference Center on Powder Springs Street and east to the Wal-Mart shopping center on Cobb Parkway south of Roswell Street. DMDA members pay a 2.09 mill tax in addition to their other local taxes.
New businesses downtown include Old Ephraim’s Restaurant and Catering on the Square, North Park Bistro, Limelight gift shop, DK Art Gallery, Cinnamon & Sage Gift Shop and Boutique, Avisca Fine Art, Go Fish clothing and jewelry, and J. King Artworks.
“Downtown Marietta is alive with new businesses,” city of Marietta economic development manager Beth Sessoms said. “With the expansion of the farmers market, the first Friday art walks, and programs for kids and adults at the renovated Strand and Theatre in the Square, it’s an exciting time to be downtown.”
