Family Life founder to receive award at NAACP’s Freedom Fund banquet

Luther Washington Jr., 38, the founder and executive director of the Family Life Restoration Center in Mableton, will receive the Community Service Award at the Cobb NAACP’s 27th annual Freedom Fund Awards banquet.

He said God gave him the vision for the faith-based center – which provides food, clothing, recreational activities and parenting and financial classes to people in need – many years ago, but Washington admits he was hesitant.

“I played hardheaded and God – in his own way – got tired of me procrastinating and took my job away from me,” recalled Washington, who had been a trucking company sales representative. He founded Family Life in 2006.

The MDJ goes on to say about Washington Jr.,

The NAACP Freedom Fund Awards, which honors individuals and organizations for their work in Cobb, will be presented Oct. 24 at the Hilton Marietta Conference Center and Resort. Besides community service, awards will be given for achievement in business, religious affairs, youth activities, education and elder accomplishment.

Deane Bonner, president of the Cobb NAACP, said this year’s theme is “NAACP: Power, Justice, Freedom, Vote.”

“We hope it will mobilize people to exercise these basic rights, especially the right to vote,” Bonner said. “In this important election year, we will extend our efforts to ensure every voter is registered, every voter casts his or her vote, and that every vote is counted.”
