So my brother in law snapped a picture for the site the other day, it was too good not to post and ask for comments – this quote was recently up in front of the Marietta Middle School. Is it just me or does this statement seem way out of line? What are your thoughts? Does it make sense? So just because at 14 someone has incredible ability to play a sport, they are wise? Interesting quote to say the least.

Good point.
I think it’s an incomplete quote (by who -I don’t know). To me, it should read something like -Wisdom is the ability to forecast human behavior or to make good choices. As it’s written, it does not make much sense.
Coming a bit late to this, but YES! My husband and I had to shake our heads at that one. There was another one up around the holidays last year that also sounded really funny: something like “Inside every child is an amazing person trying to get out”, as if children aren’t good enough as they are. Whoever is writing those ‘motivational’ signs needs an editor -
I don’t think that there is always a direct correlation with wisdom and ability. I would suggest that if they are looking for inspirational quotes, they can select any of the many fine passages from Ralph Waldo Emerson. One of my favorites is the following:
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.”
i enjoyed it.
I didn’t LOVE it.

[...] This is the title of a post on Whitlock Avenue which shows the sign for Marietta Middle school where this is topic of the sign. Interesting and something to think about. I personally don't view Wisdom and ability as even remotely related. Posted: Jul 05 2007, 10:45 AM by admin | with no comments Filed under: marietta, ability, middle school, wisdom [...]
