Nov 3rd, 2006 | By admin | Category: Site Features

The second Veterans Day Parade, sponsored by the Marietta Kiwanis Club and city of Marietta, will be held November 11, 2006. Oliver North is the parade grand marshal and keynote speaker at a program following the parade.

The parade will start at Roswell Street Baptist Church at 10 a.m. and proceed to the Marietta Square, where it will travel on South, West and East Park Square before disbanding on Lawrence Street. Entries include marching bands, drill teams, floats, veterans’ organizations and military vehicles.

Following the parade, a patriotic ceremony will be held in the Marietta Square starting at 11 a.m. There will be a helicopter fly-over by the Georgia Air National Guard and music by the Kennesaw State University Brass Quintet. The program will begin with the presentation of colors by the Georgia Black Sheep Detachment #952 Color Guard and end with a 21-gun salute and taps.

Mayor William B. Dunaway revived interest in holding a Veterans Day Parade in Marietta last year, and the Marietta Kiwanis Club took it on as a project. “I want the older vets — the ones who served in World War II especially — to know that we are still grateful for their sacrifices,” Mayor Dunaway said, “The younger service men and women need to know that we support and appreciate them today.”

Scott Chadwick, parade organizer for the Marietta Kiwanis Club, said members are eager to volunteer. “Veterans Day is a ready-made opportunity to honor those who keep us free,” he said. “The parade is a great way to say thanks.”
