The Marietta Square has gone through quite a rebirth in the past few years. Restaurants such as Willie Rae’s and the Marietta Pizza Company are staples on the dining map, while newcomers such as Thaicoon and Kiosco already welcome back loyal patrons. With the campaign to bring back The Strand theater in full swing, you know that what goes around, comes around. We’d love for you, our loyal readers, to share your memories and stories of “the Square” with us. Anything you’d like to contribute, whether it’s a recollection of the Square when you were a child, old pictures of the Marietta Square or a first impression you had when you moved here, is welcome. We’d also like to hear your thoughts on where you think the Square is going and any ideas for improvements. Blog away, Marietta!

The courthouse clock was working at that time and everyone who didn’t own a watch, such as myself, relied on it while in town. Evangelists preached in the square, mothers sat on the park benches nursing babies, not very discretely, which was something NEVER seen in Atlanta and rarely in Euharlee. Obscure movie stars would come into town and the locals would pack the park trying to get a glimpse of them. Political speeches were given there. There never seemed to be many, if any, ordinances against any park activity. Homeless men sleeping off an over indulgence of “spirits” filled the park benches. The children played on swings and a “merry go round.”This was not one with horses but was a large round wooden circle with rails to hang on to. There was bumper to bumper traffic every Saturday as we all circled the square until someone finally pulled out of a parking place. This could take up to 20 minutes. We had a couple of theaters in town then “The Cobb” which was near the “Strand Theater.” The Cobb Theater had very sticky floors and I worried about rats running around on the floor. These are just a few things that came to mind as my first impressions of the square and Glover Park; this is a 12 year old girls impressions of a new town. Post a comment
