“Save Whitlock Heights” : From What?
Apr 5th, 2006 | By admin | Category: Historic Landmarks, Marietta Real Estate, Marietta Square, Redevelopment
It seems a local neighborhood is having an all-out war over one resident?s decision to split their lot and sell the back half. If you?ve driven through North Woodland Drive lately, you might?ve noticed signs reading, ?Save Whitlock Heights!? or ?This property not for sale? in the yards of some homeowners. We heard a petition is making the rounds, as well.
Neighbors have listed some reasons why they believe the lot should not be sold. Whitlock Heights has been an established Marietta community for some time now, located right off the Square and Whitlock Avenue. Many of the longtime residents appear threatened by their neighbor?s choice to split the lot and some of the yard signs? comments come across as quite personal. Here is the Google Map of the location in question - 411 North Woodland Drive,30064:
On a ?for sale? flyer for the lot, it shows the lot being approved for splitting last year by a city official. It appears that everything is legal and approved. Now all that?s left for this resident is the approval of his neighbors.
What is your take on this situation? Do you agree with this resident?s decision to split his lot and sell the remainder or do you agree with the preservation sentiments of the other neighbors? Share your opinion by clicking the icon below!

Having grown up in Marietta (Whitlock Heights to be exact), I have seen many, many changes in my 48 years. I do not think I have ever seen the mean, vindictive, harrasing spirited people ever emerge to this extent. I think it is fine for everyone to have an opinion, but to absolutely slander, make false allegations about the property and the owners is absoluetly deplorable. I would not want to live in such a mean spirited neigborhood. We never experienced any of this growing up. There are many, many lots that have been sub-divided over the years and many that are in the process now. My personal opinion, is this family owns the property and has every right to do with it as they please. The other families (also in my opinion) need to get before God and ask themselves what God means when He says to love thy neighbor as thyself. This is a commandment. I have been praying for these hardened, mean spirited hearts. For us as Christians, we know our battle is not against flesh and blood. Press on and pray for these people and also the precious family that has been so cruely assaulted.

Life is so short. What a waste of time, energy and potential relationships.
The people who are calling themselves “a neighborhood” have obviously not taken the time to make the acquaintance of their neighbors or they would understand how ridiculous their accusations are to those who truly know them.

Perhaps the wildly indignant “wit locked” neighbors should point their collective moral compass toward the local planning and zoning commission rather than their law-abiding neighbors; or, if money is truly a non-issue to them, they could purchase the property themselves at fair market value, place a conservation easement on it and donate it to the neighborhood for a park - actually a chapel would be more appropriate and better suited to the community’s needs.
I frequently visit Marietta as I have close family realtives there. I also am aquainted with the family that has subdivided the lot. I know them to be hardworking and honorable people who would not do any thing that would bring harm to their neighbors. The property owner has every legal right to subdivide the lot and sell the undeveloped half. They have sought and secured the zoning dept and utility approvals and there is no apparent legal means to prevent the owner from selling the lot. Environmentally speaking this is a good thing as there will be no need for additional road construction, utility extension(water sewer, electricity) or other supportive infrastructure. The sad thing here is how the neighbors have treated the property owner family members. A lot of 1/2 acre which has municipal water and sewer utilities available is a very generous sized lot. Most cities have subdivisions within them that are 1/4 acre in size or smaller. The toll it has taken in hurtful comments and actions are totally unwarrented and unexcusable. It sounds like a few sour grapes are causing the problem. It may be time for a vine dressing and this venue provides that opportunity!!I will be monitoring to see if others will do some verbal pruning! LWR
